Why a Tea Bag at All

We focus on tea bags because we want tea to be accessible for people moving through their day. A great tea bag simplifies preparation so you can focus on what actually matters, the conversation across the table or the five quiet minutes before everyone else wakes up. Convenience was never a reason to compromise. It's why we chose the best material the industry had to offer.

What's Inside

Our tea bags are made from a corn-derived PLA filter material and are heat sealed without the use of additional glues or adhesives. PLA, or polylactic acid, is a plant-based material produced from fermented corn starch.

The filter is free from nylon and conventional petroleum-based plastics. The string is unbleached, natural cotton, with no dyes and no coatings. And it finishes with our crest, embossed into a thick paper tag.

Why We Chose It

PLA is a widely used alternative to conventional tea bag materials like paper or petroleum-based synthetic polymers. It provides durability and heat resistance during steeping and its fine structure lets water move freely through the leaves so the infusion stays consistent.

We want to be clear, PLA is a polymer. But it is a bio-based polymer, rather than a petroleum-based polymer. Independent research on tea bag materials is still evolving and results vary across studies. But what the research consistently shows is that PLA behaves differently and avoids the category of materials responsible for the highest levels of microplastic release.

PLA is designed to break down in industrial composting facilities, which are built to provide the necessary conditions the material needs. It will not break down in a home compost bin or standard municipal waste, so we encourage you to check what industrial composting access looks like where you live.

We can say with confidence that our tea bags are free from nylon and the conventional petroleum-based plastics found in other tea bags. We chose PLA because it gave us both the quality and the integrity we were looking for.
